You must renew your Virginia Operating Authority Certificate, License or Permit and Operating Authority Registration, if you operate solely intrastate.
Operating Authority Renewal
When you apply for your operating authority, you are given the option to choose the month your operating authority must be renewed. ( The months of June and December are not available.) A renewal application will be sent to you prior to the expiration of your authority. There is no fee to renew your operating authority. You may take your completed application to any DMV customer service center or mail it to the address shown on the application. Once your application is processed you will receive a renewal confirmation card.If you fail to renew your operating authority, you will be required to apply for original authority and comply with all of the application requirements.
Operating Authority Registration
For vehicles NOT registered under IRP (apportioned registration), the operating authority registration expires at the same time that the vehicle registration expires. A renewal notice will be mailed prior to the expiration date of your registration. You can renew at any customer service center, by telephone, by mail or renew online. The operating authority registration fee ($3 - per passenger carrier vehicle per year, $10 - per property carrier vehicle per year) will be included in your vehicle registration renewal fee. You will not be charged this fee, if you also operate interstate.Although vehicles registered under IRP are required to obtain Intrastate Operating Authority, they are no longer required to be issued corresponding registration credentials.
Effective July 1, 2008, a $5 per vehicle fee will be added to each vehicle renewal transaction conducted in the DMV Customer Service Center. For IRP registrations, the $5 per vehicle fee will be added unless only picking up prepaid credentials.
IMPORTANT: The vehicle registration renewal for your IRP vehicles has not changed.
